Biography

From pioneering commercial success as part of Deep Dish to equal global recognition within the underground scene, Dubfire is an artist whose drive, talent, and intuition have propelled him to the top of the electronic music ranks for three decades. Born in Iran and raised in the United States since the age of seven, Ali ‘Dubfire’ Shirazinia first honed his skills playing in bands and local clubs around Washington, D.C. He met Sharam Tayebi through a childhood friend in 1990, and shortly after, they formed Deep Dish: a production and DJ duo that conquered the world of electronic music, clinching the prestigious Grammy Award in 2001, alongside numerous other accolades and acknowledgments, while also contributing to paving the way for the current electronic music boom. However, at the peak of their success, both decided to take a step back and pursue solo careers, with the alias Dubfire allowing Ali to express his deep love for underground house and techno.

With a swift arsenal of innovative new music, he swiftly integrated into the minimalist scene and produced several key releases that solidified him as a true visionary and force to be reckoned with. Early tracks such as ‘RibCage (2007)’, ‘Emissions (2007),’ ‘Roadkill (2007)’, not to mention his iconic remixes of Plastikman’s ‘Spastik (2007)’ and ‘Grindhouse (2008) Radio Slave and Danton Eeprom,’—widely regarded as a bona fide classic today—ushered in a new era within the vast techno genre. Then there was his onslaught of remixes for diverse acts such as Nitzer Ebb, UNKLE, System 7, Paperclip People, Joseph Capriati, Stephan Bodzin, Audion, and Tiga among many others. Further showcasing his versatility, he co-produced two tracks on Underworld’s album Barking (2010) and collaborated with French artist Miss Kittin on acclaimed singles ‘Exit (2014)’ and ‘Ride (2016)’.

Dubfire’s extraordinary life story has been told thus far in the remarkable documentary Above Ground Level (2017), which traces the trajectory of his career from a young man during the 1979 revolution in Iran to becoming one of the biggest stars in dance music. Revealing the human story of an immigrant chasing the American dream, the film avoids the clichés of electronic music’s past and offers a profound look at the hard work and sacrifice required to achieve success in the electronic music scene. For Ali himself, Above Ground Level marked the end of a dazzling decade and the beginning of the next 20+ years of creative exploration where he will continue to set challenges to push boundaries and elevate the electronic music genre.
